Mycoplasma contamination is a major problem in cell culture in biomedical and biopharmaceutical research, with rates near 15-30%. While there is no method for visual confirmation of mycoplasma, contamination has serious effects on key characteristics and functions of cells, thus compromising any research done with them.

 

This simple PCR-based detection method uses a specially designed pair of PCR primers targeting the 16S rRNA sequences conserved in most mycoplasma species. The kit also includes a positive control to ensure the result is accurate and reliable. The method allows a rapid and qualitative assessment of whether a cell line in culture is contaminated by mycoplasma.
